Children and Youth in Worship

Just as children are included with their families at mealtime, we want young people to be included, when the family of church gathers to worship God. Through active participation in worship, young church members experience what it means to belong to God’s family, the Church. And, they discover how they can be vital, contributing members of the congregation. Since the needs and abilities of children and their families differ, during the 10:30 worship hour, child care is provided in our church nursery. In worship, children and youth have many opportunities for active participation as well as leadership.

Preschool Class is especially for our three, four and five-year-old children. They will experience a new story from the Bible each week and bring home a “story card” to share with their families. Meets in Room 104.

Worship Packets  Canvas bags filled with age-appropriate worship materials and quiet activities are available for children ages pre-school through 5th grade. These resources help them feel welcome in the sanctuary and nurture their faith. The packets are placed and marked for age groups at each door into the Sanctuary. On special worship occasions or holidays, these packets are often replaced with take home packets as a gift from the congregation.

Acolytes During the 10:30 service, older elementary aged children and youth are welcome to help prepare the congregation for worship by lighting the chancel candles at the beginning of worship and extinguishing the candles as the service ends.

Children’s Moments  During the 8:15 a.m. and the 10:30 a.m. service, children are invited to the Chancel steps to hear the Good News of God’s love for them. This “moment” ties in with the week’s sermon theme in a way that is accessible to children.

Nursery and Playroom The Children’s Nursery and Playroom is located in the hallway behind the Sanctuary. This area provides a playroom for preschoolers, a quiet room for infants, as well as trained nursery staff workers and volunteer church members.  The nursery opens at 8:00 a.m. for the early service, remains open during the church school hour and closes after the 10:30 a.m. service ends. Families are welcome to bring their children after the 10:30 a.m. Children’s Moment, or any time during either worship service. A light snack is provided and when weather permits, supervised playground time.

Playgrounds Our church grounds offer two playgrounds. One specifically designed for older infants and toddlers, the second designed for pre-school aged children that elementary aged children can also enjoy.

Liturgists  Elementary aged children and youth are seen each month serving as liturgists who lead the Call to Worship during the 10:30 a.m. service.

Annual Worship Service Middle high and high school youth plan and lead the entire worship service, annually, on Youth Sunday. This Youth Led Worship Service is a highly anticipated and meaningful worship experience.

Usher Teams Middle high and high school youth also serve on rotating Usher Teams that greet members and visitors each Sunday as well as take up the offering.

Communion High school youth who are ordained elders may also assist with the sacrament of Communion.

In this way, children and youth learn they are vital, contributing members of the congregation.
