Remember the tale of the comedic and eventful journeys of two fish, the fretful Marlin and his young son Nemo? Separated from each other in the Great Barrier Reef, the overly cautious Marlin embarks on a dangerous journey to rescue his son, while Nemo hatches a few daring plans of his own, to return safely home.
For First Presbyterian Church, Finding NeMO is also the tale about intrepid seekers who have been visiting with us during worship, connecting with us over coffee, perhaps venturing with us into some of the church’s ministries. And it’s about the God who welcomes each of us to find our home within the community of those who follow Jesus Christ. How do seekers become members? Through our New Member Orientation process, those who are considering membership with the First Presbyterian Church of Topeka, take part in a series of classes. At the conclusion of the process, those who wish to be received as members meet with the Session (the church’s governing board) to be received, as members.
Members are received in one of the following ways:
Profession of Faith – Those who have not previously been baptized and/or received into the membership of a Christian congregation may be received upon profession of faith. This profession involves turning away from sin and its power in the world, turning to Jesus Christ and accepting Him as Lord and Savior, and affirming one’s desire to be Christ’s follower, obeying His Word and showing His love.
Transfer of Letter – Those who are members of another Christian church at the time of transfer may be received by certificate of transfer.
Reaffirmation of Faith – Persons previously baptized in the name of the triune God who have publicly professed their faith, for whom a letter of transfer cannot be obtained, or when membership in another church has lapsed, may be received by reaffirmation of faith. There is no need to be baptized again, but simply to reaffirm the promises made at baptism or previous public profession of faith.
We welcome all who trust in God’s grace in Jesus Christ and desire to become a part of the fellowship and ministry of Christ’s church. Together, as a household of faith, we seek to grow in our faithfulness to God, Sharing God’s Love from the heart of Topeka.
